Concession is a webcomic created, written, and drawn by a furry named Immelmann. That's me! It updates on Tuesdays and Fridays.
I. Info
Concession is run by a privately-distributed webcomic code written by A. Lillian Gist specifically (sorta) for Concession. Concession's RSS feed is done by RSSpect.
Concession is coded on Macromedia Dreamweaver 8; the comic itself is done with Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Adobe Flash CS3 (8 for older comics, not that it makes a difference)
.
Comics 1-99 used Comic Sans (a sin, I know). The new comic font for Concession is called Immelfont and is a custom-made, private use font based loosely on my handwriting.
The title font is Century Gothic.
II. Background
I'm not totally sure what inpsired me to start a webcomic - no doubt I saw comics like VG Cats and said, hey, I can do that. Or, more likely, my brain suddenly said "YOU'RE DOING THAT," and that was pretty much the end of that debate.
I used to work at a movie theatre, so even before I decided to do a webcomic, ideas were coming to me. It all started out with Joel, a character I would use as a medium through which I could say to customers everything I really wanted - the things that, said for real, would get me fired and possibly arrested. The concept and ideas swelled and expanded on their own from there.
Originally, Concession was hosted on ComicGenesis, but on November 8th, 2007, I officially moved to our own webspace, where I plan to stay as long as possible.
III. About the Author
My name is Immelmann, and this is my webcomic. I'm a furry, in case you couldn't figure that out. My fursona of choice, which you can see to your right, is a wolf-rabbit hybrid.
I live in Massachusetts - kinda close to Boston - and am in college currently, studying Graphic Arts. I've been drawing my whole life, although Concession is the first real project I've ever started. When not drawing, I like to compose music and sometimes I do a little writing.
My name, "Immelmann", comes from the anime Last Exile, which, in turn, takes the name from the WWI German fighter pilot Max Immelmann. The name was given to me by a good friend and made its first public appearance at Anime Boston 2006.

To your left is Tyras, my pet. He appears a few times with me in Concession and more often in At the Heart of it All. I named him after a dog owned by the real Max Immelmann.
IV. The Method
Concession is drawn exclusively in Photoshop 7.0, with a Wacom tablet.
After initial sketching on paper as a way of planning the comic, each panel is drawn individually at 2x the size you see it as in the comic (you can see one at full size when you vote at BuzzComix).
The step-by-step drawing process is as follows:
1. Loose, blue outlines to show just position and pose. 2. Purple outlines to develop form and outlines. 3. Black outlines, then colors.
4. Shading, then background.
After every panel is done, they're pieced together, puzzle-like almost, and then dragged into Flash, where the text and the speech bubbles are added.
V. Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have any plans on publishing Concession?
Absolutely not :D
There are a number of reasons why Concession, in it's current incarnation, can never be put into book form. First off, the comic length is very inconsistent, with some being only two rows long, others stretching to eight. I can't imagine how to make the lay out of the book work with that problem. Also, a lot of the older comics (anything before the Chelsie Saga) don't exist in high-res format. See the version on the site? That's all that's left.
The second problem is all the blatant copyright violations I've done. Pikachu, Orbitz Gum, Time Squad, iPod, Zune, various movie posters... There's no way to get around this. Not to mention the images by other artists I used for posters and paintings in backgrounds.
Concession was never designed to be published. Since the beginning, I made the decision to ignore this possibility. Concession is built to exist as it is and nothing more.
There are other options though. It's not impossible to consider publishing one or two "best of" collections, where I re-draw selected strips and put them into a book. But a publisher would have to give me a pretty damn good offer for that.
Not including your fursona, which character do you think you're most like?
I relate most to Joel and Roland. Joel started as a representation of me, as what I wanted to be and say. He still represents that - he, as a character, is partially inspired by a few friends of mine, powerful and outgoing people, who I wish I was more like.
Roland is an artist, so I relate to him too. Simple.
Do you take ideas or suggestions? I have this great idea for a comic/plot/new character... No, no, double no. Does this ever happen? I dare think it rarely does. Apart from the obvious reason of most furries having terrible ideas, the Concession story is fixed and somewhat tight, there'd be absolutely no way to fit in anything I didn't write. Plus, a lot of you misunderstand a lot of features about the canon. Obviously this is not your fault, as there are plenty of things yet to be revealed.
Do you plan on continuing Concession for a long time?
As long as I can! But it won't last forever. I'm not Tim Buckley; I understand that comics can't last forever and keep their charm. Concession has a defined ending. I'm not going to drag it out.
But that won't be for years and years from now. So don't even think about it. |
